Lenovo AR Design Guidelines

Created augmented reality design guidelines, all the way from zero to launch.

Background

The Lenovo ThinkReality design team wanted to create AR design guidelines, for guiding creators who are new to augmented reality.

As a freelance design contractor, I scoped the contents of the 1st release, formed the information architecture, authored the pages, while also managing all pages through an editing & review process.

Key challenges

Overcoming device limitations

AR glasses in 2019 were full of technical limitations. How to create design practices for devices with less-than-ideal UX?

Guidelines for bleeding-edge technology

Emerging technology, with only few design guidelines written previously.

Working with scarce resources

I was hired to handle the project mostly by myself.

Artefacts

Guidelines available on web portal

Guidelines were published in Lenovo's developer portal in 2019, and are still available in: https://thinkreality.uds-dev.lenovo.com/design/ (the styling and contents have changed since).

Information architecture

I created the information architecture of the guidelines and authored all pages of the original release.

Section: Input Options

A page explaining input options which were relevant to the Lenovo ThinkReality devices at the time of writing.

Section: Contextual factors affecting AR design

One key difference of AR design compared to traditional UX design are the various comfort, environment and hardware factors that should be considered.

Section: Input and feedback

Examples of pages guiding the reader on input and feedback. Clear and efficient input & feedback from the system is critical for professional AR users.
